The Art of Getting Dressed: A Little Structure, A Little Romance
I’ve always preferred clothes that feel considered without looking overly styled. Something is appealing about an outfit with a little personality, a little contrast, and that doesn’t require much thought once you put it on.
This fall, I’m particularly drawn to soft knits, interesting silhouettes, feminine details, and richer colors. Nothing too complicated. Just pieces that make getting dressed a little more interesting.
Two looks have caught my attention recently, each for a different reason.
A Little Romance
Pairing a simple black cardigan or sweater with a delicate lace-trimmed skirt feels charming. The contrast is what makes the outfit work. The cardigan is classic and understated, while the shorts introduce something softer and slightly unexpected.
Add cream ballet flats, or mid-calf boots and a small structured handbag, and the whole thing suddenly feels polished without being particularly formal.
I like that balance. Not everything needs to match perfectly, and not every outfit needs a statement piece. Sometimes it’s enough to combine two things that wouldn’t ordinarily go together. It’s the kind of styling that makes familiar wardrobe staples feel new again.
A Little Structure
For something more substantial, I’m loving a fitted black knit with a printed, asymmetric skirt and tall suede boots. The Veronica Beard Hartley Asymmetric Midi Skirt is a particularly beautiful example. The scarf-inspired print gives it character, while the uneven hemline creates movement without overwhelming the rest of the outfit.
I would keep everything else simple—a black top, brown suede boots, minimal jewelry, and perhaps a structured handbag. It’s an interesting combination because the silhouette does most of the work. You don’t need layers of accessories or an elaborate styling formula. And I love that it feels feminine without being overly precious.

The Simple, Well-Cut Black Sweater
I tend to return to a simple black top, especially when I’m wearing something with a little more going on below. The Ripley Rader Sweater Knit Long Sleeve Top works with this Veronica Beard midi skirt because it lets the pattern shine without making the outfit feel unfinished. The crew neckline keeps things clean, and the slim-but-relaxed fit is the balance I want here. I don’t want anything bulky competing with the skirt, but I also don’t want to feel squeezed all afternoon.
I’d tuck it in to define the waist, then add tall brown boots, a small black bag, and a little gold jewelry. That’s pretty much the outfit. I like the midi skirt's movement against the top's simplicity, and the brown boots give the black something warmer to sit next to. It feels considered without requiring many decisions, which is usually what I’m looking for when I get dressed.
Getting Dressed Should Still Be Fun
I don’t think personal style needs to become another project to manage. There’s already enough of that in everyday life. What interests me more is finding pieces with a little character and figuring out how to wear them naturally.
Sometimes that’s a lace detail with a classic cardigan or a black sweater. Sometimes it’s a printed skirt with tall boots. And sometimes it’s simply a beautifully cut pair of pants.
The common thread is knowing when to keep things simple and when to introduce something unexpected. Because the best outfits, at least to me, have a little of both.
