The Fall Uniform I’ll Be Wearing on Repeat

There are certain fall combinations that never really need an introduction. Corduroy and cashmere are two of them.

One brings texture and a little bit of vintage character; the other brings softness and polish. Together, they create the kind of outfit that feels unmistakably autumnal without looking overly styled—which is exactly what I want from a fall wardrobe.

This season, I’m drawn to the combination of Veronica Beard corduroy pants with a classic white cashmere sweater. It’s simple, but simplicity is often what makes an outfit feel the most luxurious.

The corduroy pants have their own personality. Corduroy has a warmth and texture that denim doesn’t quite have, and a great pair can anchor an entire fall wardrobe. I like the idea of wearing them with everything from a button-down and blazer to something as uncomplicated as a soft cashmere sweater.

Then there’s the white cashmere sweater. I love white and ivory in the fall because it feels especially fresh against the richer textures and deeper colors of the season. Paired with corduroy, it looks polished without feeling overly formal.

That’s really the appeal of this combination: it doesn’t require much else.

Add loafers or ballet flats for daytime, boots when the temperature drops, and a structured handbag to make it feel a little more polished. For jewelry, I’d keep things simple—gold hoops, a watch, or a delicate necklace. The corduroy and cashmere already give the outfit enough texture.

The beauty of the sweater is its versatility, too. It can soften tailored trousers, make jeans feel more polished, or add a touch of refinement to a more casual fall look. A good cashmere sweater is one of those pieces that earn their place in a wardrobe because you can reach for them again and again.

And the same is true of the corduroy pants.

For me, this is what makes a good fall wardrobe: pieces that don’t require an entirely new outfit every time you wear them.

The pants can become the foundation for a dozen different looks. The sweater can move from morning coffee to lunch to dinner. Together, they create an outfit that feels appropriate for the season without looking like you’ve dressed head-to-toe for fall. There’s something to be said for an outfit that makes getting dressed easy.

Fall is when I want clothes to have texture, warmth, and a little more richness. I want pieces that feel good and silhouettes that make sense for the way I actually spend my days. I want clothes that work with boots and flats, with a coat and without one, with a casual afternoon and a slightly more dressed-up evening. This combination does all of that.

It’s polished without being precious. Comfortable without looking casual. Classic without feeling predictable.

In other words, it’s exactly the kind of outfit I want on repeat all season.

THE SPRITZ LIST TAKE

Corduroy + white cashmere is my fall formula.

If you’re building a fall wardrobe rather than simply buying fall clothes, start with pieces that can do more than one thing. A great pair of textured trousers and a beautiful neutral cashmere sweater will take you considerably further than a closet full of pieces you can only wear one way.
